The Annotated Wacky Packages All-New Series 1
- Goya Black Eye Peas
- Tom Bunk
- circa 1991
- "Gooya" was created for possible inclusion in a follow-up to the 1991 Wacky Packages series. When that second series was cancelled, the title languished in Topps' inventory for over a decade.
In 2004, Topps intended to print "Gooya" as an ANS1 bonus card to be available only in a unique box sold at Target stores and other outlets. However, apparently after the company rethought its standards concerning the portrayal of food as infested with bugs, it was replaced by "Coach Motel" as the B2 sticker (no "Gooya" cards were printed).
The "Gooya" art was revised at some point in its history. A 1990s-era scan from artist Tom Bunk features the tag line "Recommended By People With Facial Hair." The version that would have been printed in 2004 reads instead, "Recommended by People Who Work for Us." Additionally, the earlier text "Cross Eye Fleas On Black Eye Peas" was modified to read "Cross Eye Fleas With Black Eye Peas."
At left, the earlier "Facial Hair" version, followed by the nearly-published "People Who Work For Us" revision. (See a side-by-side comparison.)
Topps sold the original "Gooya" painting in an eBay auction that ran from November 11-18, 2004.
